Verizon Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL to get RCS chat on December 6

It looks like another major U.S. carrier is ready to embrace Rich Communication Services (RCS).

Verizon today confirmed that it will roll out RCS messaging to the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL beginning this Thursday, December 6. Those are the only phones on Verizon that’ll get RCS for now, but Verizon does say that it plans to expand the feature to more phones “in the future.”

Here’s Verizon’s full statement to The Verge regarding its RCS plans:

“Verizon and Google will be rolling out enhanced messaging (RCS) in the Messages app on Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL beginning this Thursday, December 6th. This messaging service brings, for example, typing indicators, very large group chats and the ability to transfer large files between the owners of these smartphones.”

RCS is a big upgrade over the text messaging that many of us have become accustomed to. With it, you get features like typing indicators, read receipts, group chats, the ability to send large attachments, and more, and it’s all built into the Messages app that comes with your phone. You do need to be chatting with someone else who has RCS to get these features, though, so you Verizon Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL owners may not see these features in all your messaging threads right away. Still, it’s nice to see another carrier begin rolling out RCS to its customers. Here’s to hoping that more Verizon phones get it soon.
